John cursed himself all the way back to the red wagon. He had wanted to frighten her, to show her the dangers that awaited a naive young woman alone. Yet the moment he touched her, all thoughts of teaching Emma a lesson had fled his mind, leaving only a nearly all-consuming urge to throw her upon the hard ground and rut like a beast. He disgusted himself. Why hadn’t the lust that signaled the beast at rest within him begun to fade as his hearing and sight enhancements had? Instead, his desire for Emma seemed to increase with each passing day. If this continued, he would hurt her before he was through. Just as Devora had predicted. He would be unable to stop himself from taking her innocence. No matter that the beast within him would do the taking, Emma would suffer.

They came from two different worlds, as different as the sun and the moon, one rising as the other falls. She the sunshine and laughter and color and life. He the night and tears and darkness and death.

Even if he killed the evil one and ended the curse upon him, there could never be a future for himself and Emma. The circus was her life, her ambition to become the premier female tiger tamer in the world. He had vowed to spend his life healing others. Andrewsville still needed him, and when his mission here was complete he must return to his duties.

“Francie?”

The sound of Franz Gerhardt’s voice, weaker and softer than usual, drifted to them from the red wagon.

Emma drew in a sharp breath and started to run toward the sound of her grandfather’s voice. After tripping once, she righted herself without John’s help. She burst through the bushes and onto the road, just as Franz jumped down from the red wagon.

“Grandfather, what are you doing up?” Emma reached him and put her hand upon his arm.

“Francie, where is everyone?” He grabbed her hand and squeezed, causing Emma to wince. “Why are we out here alone?”

John stood at the edge of the road and observed Franz. The change in the man was incredible. Where a few days before he had been strong, able-bodied and in charge of a large operation, today he appeared weak, addled and totally dependent upon Emma, who he continued to refer to by her mother’s name.

“I’m Emmaline, Grandfather. Mother is dead. Do you remember?”

He wrinkled his brow, then shook his head. “I know your mother is dead, Francie. I just don’t like to remember. She didn’t want to leave her family in the Old Country, but I made her. I told her of the riches we would have here. How famous our circus would be. She always believed in me, and I brought her here to die.”

“Grandfather, that’s not true. You couldn’t have stopped the fever that took Grandma. No one could have.”

John found himself nodding in agreement, recalling his mother and all the others he’d lost to mysterious illnesses. The reminder of what he neglected while traveling with Gerhardt Circus brought a wave of sadness through his mind.
